Salmon Fishing in Alaska
The Kenai River is in a class of its own. The river supports a healthy population of Chinook (king), Sockeye (red), and Coho (silver) Salmon every year. The king salmon that call the Kenai home are like no other. They are truly the world’s biggest salmon and deserve respect. The Kenai River supports one of Alaska’s few road accessible red salmon fisheries. The reds that return to the Kenai enter the river by the thousands. It is truly amazing how many fish are in the river at one time. With literally hundreds of thousands of fish in the river, it can be very easy to catch your limit. The silver salmon that return to the Kenai are absolutely astounding. They are very large and full of fight adding to the many attractions of the river. The Kenai is also known for it trophy size rainbow trout and dolly varden. In late August and early September, the river is second to none when it comes to rainbow trout fishing.
The Kenai River is one of Alaska’s premier sport fishing destinations. Clearly the most popular river in Alaska, anglers from all over the world fish the Kenai River each season. With trophy Chinook salmon caught every year, it’s no wonder why so many anglers can’t resist this world-class fishery. The Kenai River, flowing approximately 80 miles in length, sits on the Kenai Peninsula just a short drive from Anchorage. For a first time visitor to Alaska, the Kenai River is mind blowing with its glacially fed brilliant blue waters. The river is best fished from a boat, but offers bank fishermen a great shot at catching fish. However, there is more to the river than just the fishing. Many residents of Alaska make their lively hood from the rivers resources. Conservation efforts are being made to keep the Kenai River one of Alaska’s best fisheries. Great Alaska Adventure Lodge »
Southeast Alaska
Dolly Varden and Cutthroat Trout are plentiful in nearby lakes and streams, providing year-round excitement. Most Cutthroat and Dollies range from 10-21 inches. These tenacious trout and char leave no shortage of action – you may find yourself catching and releasing till your arms give out! Trout fly fishing gear should include a 3-5 weight rod and a quality reel. An assortment of smolt patterns and dry flies including Stimulators, Adams, Mosquitoes and assorted Nymphs will have the trout and Dollies jumping. Non-stop battles heat up in July with Coho and Sockeye Salmon runs, followed by a sea of Pink and Chum Salmon in August. The vast majority of these fish have never seen an artificial fly, much less taken one. Both skilled and novice fisherman will need to brace themselves for the thrill of a lifetime when these trophy Salmon hit. The fight is non-stop, and the sheer rod-bending action is exhilarating to say the least! Boardwalk Wilderness Lodge »
Sometimes called the "panhandle," is a land of deep
fjords, rushing mountain streams and glaciers. Much of
the land is in the Tongass National Forest. Summers are
cool and moist; winters are cooler and snowy, but much
less cold than portions of Alaska not warmed by the
ocean. Salmon return in large numbers to thousands of
streams. Halibut move into near shore waters in the
summer. Several species of trout are available.
