El Pescador Fly Fishing Lodge
This family-run resort on the beach of Ambergris Caye welcomes you to the best in adventure and accommodations. At El Pescador you may choose from a standard hotel room in our main lodge or a private villa 1, 2, or 3 bedroom villa accommodation. Our main lodge is an intimate, 14-room hotel set in a colonial style mahogany building with a long verandah overlooking the beach and barrier reef. El Pescador Villas is a collection of beautiful one, two and three-bedroom villas, set in 2 individual groupings, each surrounding a private pool. El Pescador is on the Bahia del Punta Arena, 2.6 miles north of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. The spot is quiet and private, yet close enough to reach town on foot, bicycle, shuttle, water taxi or golf cart. The El Pescador property stretches across the island from beach to lagoon, offering immediate access to fishing, snorkeling or shelling.
For 25 years, anglers from all corners of the earth, have come to fish this little paradise in the Atlantic Ocean. Situated on Ambergris Caye, a small island 15 minutes by light aircraft from the Belizean mainland, El Pescador has grown famous for offering classic sight fishing to the big three, namely tarpon, permit and bonefish. Although mainly a tarpon venue, it offers good fishing for bonefish and permit as well. El Pescador is consistently listed as one of the best spots on earth to catch Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon. Let's take a closer look why this is so and what you can expect.
First they are the only fishing lodge on the island. This means you will have this fishery to yourself almost all the time. No other lodges can get here; it's just too far away. They are located about 10 miles off the coast of mainland Belize. The flats are sand, turtle grass and coral. Some are wadeable, so bring your booties if you like to wade. We tend to fish out of our boats due to the enormous scale of the fishery (you can cover so much more water by boat). The great preponderance of the flats are "skinny water" ...water depths average between 1 1/2 and 5 feet, with an occasional channel or cut going down to 12 - 15 feet. This means floating lines are the norm, although you can bring an intermediate as a spare. Seasons do not exist here in the temperate sense, the annual variation is less than ten degrees F. The only real "season" they have is during late summer when they have the Tarpon migration. At this time the Tarpon numbers double with the addition of a large migratory population. Remember however that they have a year-round population of Bones, Permit and Tarpon. Their fishery offers a legitimate shot at a Grand Slam 12 months a year.
The bonefish grounds are 10 to 20 minutes from the lodge and the tarpon flats begin 20 minutes from there. Most of the bonefishing is done from the bow of a boat but there are 4 or 5 flats that can be waded. The bones run from 2-5 lbs. and are plentiful. The tarpon flats are 3-8 feet deep and are quite extensive, approximately 35 miles long by 15 miles wide.
Not all the tarpon flats are fishable everyday due to changing weather conditions and currents, but generally speaking, we have good tarpon fishing all year round. The tarpon run from 10 to100+ lbs.; the average winter fish is about 50-60 lbs. with the average summer fish being 90 - 150 lbs. Permit are found on the bonefish flats, some of the shallow tarpon flats as well as in waves coming over the reef. Our permit range from 4-30 lbs. with the majority being about 8-10 lbs. and found in large schools. Jack crevalle, barracuda, cobia and snook are also found on the flats and in the surrounding mangrove lagoons.
El Pescador clients can also enjoy fishing the reef for snappers, grouper, wahoo, mackerel, jacks, cobia, barracuda, king fish, rainbow runners, trigger fish and during mid-May to mid-August, tarpon. Permit, bonefish and tarpon are always released; some snook, snapper, barracuda, & grouper are kept for the table.
