Guatemala Sailfishing Trips

Fly Fishing for Sailfish

Sailfishing in Guatemala

Scientists who have studied the large numbers of sailfish off the coast of Guatemala have concluded this might be the largest breeding ground for Pacific Sailfish in the world. While we call our prime season November thru May, sailfish are caught year round in Guatemala. Since we've been in business, not one of our clients has failed to release a sailfish! We have an amazing fishery. We protect it by practicing catch and release and using circle hooks. If you like billfishing, you'll love Guatemala for its quantity of fish and ease of access. You can't beat the cost per release anywhere in the world!

With numbers like 80 releases in a single day and 145 releases in 3 days on conventional tackle or 24 releases on the fly in a single day, it’s clear that Guatemala’s Pacific coast offers the highest concentrations of billfish found anywhere in the world. We offer two first class sailfishing resorts for you to choose from - Sailfish Bay Lodge and Pacific Fins Resort

Sailfish Guatemala

Guatemala has gained an international reputation as having one of the highest year-round concentrations of billfish, in particular Pacific sailfish. Guatemala’s Pacific Coast forms an enormous, natural eddy, rich in bait and pelagic fish. Billfish and many other sportfishing species are found in great numbers. While we call our prime season November thru May, sailfish are caught year round in Guatemala with small twin peaks occurring usually in the November-December months and again in the April-May time frame.

The larger sailfish up to 150 pounds are usually taken during the Fall but for pure volume of 80 to 100 pound fish, December through June tends to be the rule. During this time you’ll be tantalized with 20 - 40 bites a day and, on some of those exceptional days, more than 70!  Days with finicky or non-aggressive feeders are far and few between.

Marlin add to the excitement and they generally show up in concentrations for a week or more several times a year. The Fall and Spring both have at least a 2 week period when blue marlin appear and tend to displace a portion of the sailfish. During these times, a run to the far offshore drop can normally put you on a 100 pound or better yellowfin tuna as well as the average 400 pound blue marlin. Closer to home, you’ll enjoy 10 - 20 sailfish bites a day. Throughout the year there are lots of football size tuna and dolphin in the 20 to 40 pound range to be caught, should that be your choice. Join us in Guatemala for some of the best offshore fishing in the world!

Direct flights leave from several U.S. cities several times a day for Guatemala City. There are three daily departures aboard American Airlines from Miami and it is less than a 2 ½ hour flight. Come on the morning flight to witness some of Guatemala's natural beauties or leave on the evening flight if your schedule so demands. After clearing customs, our chauffeur will meet you to drive you to Iztapa, a 1 ½ hour trip over a new highway.
