Tropic Star Lodge Fishing Report

Tropic Star Lodge Sportfishing

Fishing Pinas Bay, Panama

March 15th - March 22nd, 2008

Scott Gamster has been chasing a large Roosterfish for a number of years now. Not only did he get his Roosterfish of 50lbs, he also caught his first Black Marlin of 400lbs and a Yellowfin tuna of 70lbs. Darrell Ross was not to be outdone by his fishing buddy and matched him with his first Black Marlin which was also about 400lbs and a nice Amberjack of 40lbs.

Old school friends David Witham and Bill Firth had some of the best fishing one can ask for during their stay with us. Both David and Bill caught their first Black Marlin and then when they spent some time inshore Bill caught Rooster fish of 70lbs and 40lbs and David one of 50lbs. They also enjoyed plenty of Yellowfin tuna and Dorado action.

Dale Smith, Ronald Glinski and Nicholas Fergis had a ball fishing with light tackle on the inshore reefs. On one day Ronald caught five different types of fish using the same lure. On Tuesday they caught 5 Snapper, 5 Grouper, 3 Yellow fin tuna and plenty of Spanish Mackerel. They did however venture offshore and Dale caught his first Black Marlin of 350lbs after a long tug of war.

Warren Abrams brought his son, Brad here to catch his first billfish. Brad was rewarded with a monster Pacific Sailfish of about 130lbs while dad had some fun with some large Grouper. They share the fun in catching Yellowfin and Dorado.

Well known fishing author Ray Rychnovsky was joined by his long time fishing companion Susan Weinblatt and her friend Michelle Hopkins. Susan provided Ray with some good photo opportunities for his next book when she caught her first Black Marlin. They also caught a number of Yellowfin tuna and Dorado.

Judd Rosen and Michael Simpson from Miami came looking for Michaels first Black Marlin. They got even more than they bargained for when Michael caught his first Black Marlin of 200lbs and a little later Judd released a larger Black Marlin of 400lbs. Michael’s luck continued when he caught a Blue Marlin later in the week, after having a epic tussle with a 50lb Yellow fin tuna for an hour on a spinning rod.

Brian Brumfield and Darlene Bonis enjoyed a relaxing week and some good fishing. Darlene was more than overjoyed when she released her first Blue Marlin and then later a 35lb Roosterfish. Brian has some fun with Pacific Sailfish and also caught a Broomtail Grouper of 30lbs. The Yellowfin tuna kept them busy in between all this action.

Elias and Anne Marie Charur were more than pleased with their weeks fishing when Elias caught his first Blue Marlin early in the week and then another one later in the week which punished him for 1hour 10 mins. Anne Marie preferred the lighter action and caught herself a lovely sailfish of about 110lbs. Elias added a 40lb Cubbera Snapper to his catch list when they did a spot of inshore fishing.

Margo Vincent visited us once again in her pursuit of world records on a fly rod. Although she might not have broken any records, Margot enjoyed plenty of action. She caught a Blue Marlin and a Sail fish on conventional tackle as well as plenty of Dorado and Tuna. She completed her week by going inshore on Friday and caught a large Cubera Snapper and a Broomtail Grouper.

John Michaelis and Thomas St. Hiliare enjoyed a good week of fishing with Captain Armando aboard the Puerto Rico. They caught Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Spanish Mackerel and Sailfish while celebrating the birth of Thomas’ latest grandchildren.

Gary Ganz was accompanied by his son Michael and his friends Jim and Rich Lions for a week that saw them enjoying a lot of inshore action with Snappers and also a few Grouper on the deeper reefs.

Brothers Rob and Jeremy Hunt also did some deep fishing for Grouper and were rewarded with 3 in one afternoon. They also caught plenty of Yellowfin Tuna with a number of Dorado in between.
