Tropic Star Lodge Fishing Report
Fishing Pinas Bay, Panama
August 30th - Sept. 6th, 2008
John Beris and his wife Bobbi Daughtry also visited us for a few days of fishing. Bobbi tagged and released her first Blue Marlin approximately 275 lbs and although John did not score on billfish, he did have some fun with a 80 lb+ Yellowfin Tuna. Congrats!
Richard and Yvonne Buckley returned to Pinas Bay for the 5th time this season. The couple has fished these waters over thirty times in the last 10 years. Yvonne is a remarkable angler and fishes stand up tackle exclusively. Over the course of the week she went 2 for 5 on Black Marlins and also tagged and released 4 Blue marlin up to 500 lbs, with a couple of sails thrown into the mix. Also worth mentioning is that one of Yvonne's marlins had been previously tagged and the mate was able to retrieve it from the fish. To put things into perspective, only 4 marlin tags were retrieved worldwide in 2007 which makes this a unique catch. We anxiously await the data from The Billfish Foundation (TBF) which would reveal the exact date and location the fish had been previously tagged. Congratulations Yvonne on your great catch and we do look forward to seeing you next season.
Christopher Bolin and his wife Gunilla Folhstrom joined us at the lodge for the first time to celebrate their honeymoon and, of course, do some marlin fishing. This couple had been around the globe to places such as Thailand and Ease Africa in search of marlin with little luck. I wont forget the look on Chris's face when he returned to the docks on day two all smiles and quite deservedly as he had just tagged and released his first Black Marlin. His wife Gunilla did not have to wait long as she too got her first Black Marlin estimated at 350 lbs, the very next day. She did also manage to release her first Pacific Sailfish and went 4 for 7 on Sails on the last day. The couple also had a good deal of action with 9 Dorado up to 50 lbs. Great job., and we all look forward to seeing you in February 2009.
Wayne Harris a frequent guest at Tropic Star, bought his nephew Todd and business colleagues Michael Rogers, Ron Nielson, Chris Willis, Paul Dyer and Robert Bates down for a short two day fishing trip and boy, these guys got into some great Marlin action. Mike had an incredible day, tagging and releasing 2 Blue Marlin and his first Black Marlin estimated at 350 lbs. Well done! (Three Marlin in one day) Chris Willis released his first Blue Marlin around 250 lbs and Ron Neilson also released his first Blue Marlin. Well done guys!
William Embrey and Marcy Burford also visited us this week for the first time. Marcy got lucky on her first day out and released her first Blue Marlin estimated at 250 lbs, and also released her first Pacific Sailfish.
